Menuka’s family members depart from camp

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has expedited the resettlement process of remaining two family members of late Menuka Poudel, who committed suicide in Phoenix of Arizona last week.

Menuka’s only brother and the eldest child of her aged parents, Hari Poudel, 29, and Damber Kumari Poudel, 25, were brought to the IOM transit camp on December 6 through emergency flight schedule to join their mourning family in the US.

“I am thankful for both UNHCR and IOM as they listened to our urgent request,” Hari told Bhutan News Service at the transit camp. “We are equally thankful for support from the media side in expediting our process.”

According to the flight schedule, the duo will depart from Tribhuwan International Airport, Kathmandu at 11 pm today.

Meanwhile, the dead body of late Menuka was cremated following Hindu procedures on Tuesday, our Arizona correspondent reported.

Representatives from various resettlement agencies, community folks and service providers paid their last tribute to late Poudel and shared their condolences with the bereaved family.

Poudel was rushed to a nearby hospital when she was found hanging on a scarf on last Tuesday afternoon at her apartment. Doctors had declared her dead at 6.30 pm local time the next day.

The cause of her death is not known until the filing of this report.

Poudel originally hailed from Dagana district of Southern Bhutan who was resettled in the Phoenix in USA only two months ago from Beldangi II refugee camp in Nepal.

Meanwhile BNS has requested the fellow Bhutanese and well wishers to contact BNS team at [email protected] to support the bereaved family.
