Under a heavy applause and ovation, Lila Siwakoti released his first album ’Yaad Timro’ (your remembrance) in one of the theaters in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on April 18, 2015.
Born with Shree Narayan and Pabi Siwakoti from Tshirang Bhutan, Lila was just a toddler when he entered the Sanischare Camp, Morang, Nepal. He says that he put his thought into singing at a very early age and his favorites still remains a mix of ‘lok-pops and modern’.

As clear as a broad daylight, it is seen that the twenty years of trials and tribulations has also brought about and given rise to a laying of a substantial number of ‘golden eggs in the shabby nests’. Sadly, to be truthful, they remained largely unseen and unsung and their values barely went beyond the periphery of the refugee camps.
However, after the resettlement in the Third World, the ‘potential eggs’ appeared to have reached a desired warmth and maturity and a series of breakdowns and cracklings can be observed all across America and beyond.
The album carries a pack of six solo songs with an aura of lok-pop, modern and gazal. He claims that among his creations, his latest music video—gajale gajale—due to be released soon, is expected to win the hearts of larger audience.
Nevertheless, all his songs are unique and appealing with appropriate lyrics and musical settings. Of all, he has been able to carve a niche of his own against the growing trend of plagiarism. In the album, Durga Rimal, Krishna Udashi, Geeta Khatri, Ishor Prabashi, Govinda Humagai and Hom Nath Neupane have composed the lyrics.
Pratap Subba, presently residing in California, USA is the trendsetter of Nepali music among the Bhutanese of Nepali origin. His trademark song ’Bandhan ko chino’ became an instant hit and is still enjoyed by many.

Dozens of Bhutanese resettled in the state of Utah gathered to observe their new year, Vikram Era 2072, in Liberty Park located in the heart of Utah State Capital, Salt Lake City, on April 11.
Speaking to welcome the guests and audiences, Jaga Adhikari, vice chairman of board of directors of Bhutanese Community in Utah(BCU) reflected on Vikram Era and its history.
Senior women from the Bhutanese community engage themselves in singing sangini during the new year celebration
“We have felt welcomed here by the local diverse cultural, community and I can say that Salt Lake City is one of the best places to resettle for anyone coming to the USA,” Adhikari said.
The cultural program entertained guests from the mayor office, resettlement agencies, local community and general public with their artful presentations like modern Nepali, Hindi and Nepali ancient traditional folk dances (sangini) and songs.
Kishor Siwakoti, the invited guest singer and a youth artist from Sioux Fall, South Dakota was the center of attraction of the program. He sang different Napoli songs including one on suicide prevention theme.
Gyanu Dulal, Community Resource Specialist (BCU) Department of Workforce Services, wished best wishes for the upcoming New Year 2072 to all and hoped to bring forth many more programs to share with local community as part of Salt Lake City population with the help from local government, community and stakeholders in the same manner in future.
When asked by BNS representative about how difficult, as a young leader, was to organize programs and what were his future programs, BCU president and chairperson of the program, Ryam Neupane said, “I am feeling great for the help every single person, groups and senior extended to materialize this grand function in this open park and am very enthusiastic to further plan effectively to develop an activity calendar to give more and share with local community in future.”
As per him, Bhutanese Community in Utah has also invited Meri Basai artists Dhurmus and Suntoli, singers like Pramod Kharel, Pashupati Sharma and Sangita Thapa Magar and their program is taking place on May 31.

One of the resettled Bhutanese, Rudra P Kafley, 23, on Monday pleaded guilty to “motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol” in death of his friend, Moti Kuikel.
According to local media reports, Assistant District Attorney James Forsyth asked Hampden Superior Court Judge Richard Carey to sentence Kafley to two and a half years in state prison. However, Carey opted recommendation of the defense lawyer, Brandom Freeman, allowing Kafley to serve in the Hampden County Correctional Center in Ludlow with one year to be served and the rest suspended with two years probation.

A media report said, the charge was from the May 25 crash when Kafley’s 2011 Nissan Altima struck a tractor-trailer parked in an Interstate 291 breakdown lane. Altima’s passenger, Moti Kuikel, who sustained critical injuries, was later pronounced dead.
Kafley, who was a student of Springfield Technical Community College, came to the United States in April 2011. He is also reported to have at least two prior crash records, one of which was his fault and one of which was not.
The judge also warned Kafley that the guilty conviction could mean he would face deportation to Nepal, where he has none of his relatives and family members.
Alongside interstate annual soccer tournament slated to kick start from June 19, the soccer hounds, players, music buffs and of all—the ardent ‘devotees’ of ‘brain n beauty’, are expected to beat the days’ heat with some fairly cool evenings in one of the banquet halls of Nashville.
Participants and organizers in their promo night held in Nashville
In the twilights of June 19 and the next day, some prominent soloists, hoofers and other thriving Bhutanese music makers will groove the crowd. Among the varying list of contests, items like singing, dancing, the projection of short movies and a few others are expected to rule the roost in the first two days. Some group dances will also feature in between the jigs and melodies.
Meanwhile, the third day, according to the organizer, is presumed to come with much ruptures and excitement. Bhutanese maidens and damsels, between the age of 18 -26, will parade catwalks and ‘heat’ the runway in the midst of jeering crowd and a panel of judges. Amid some musical vibes from a seasoned Disc Jockey (DJ), the aspiring girls vying to compete for the coveted crown—Miss Bhutan USA (2015) –will eventually flaunt their extensively hyped “ brain n beauty ” in the later rounds.
A couple of days ahead of the show, former Miss Bhutan USA, Prakriti Rai reinforced by a set of hired beauticians will be called in to tutor, buttress and groom the craving lassies coming in from Tennessee, adjoining states and beyond. A bevy of damsels are expected to ‘twist, twirl and swirl’ with some predictably titillating moves as a part of annual Bhutanese extravaganza. Eventually, the bash is expected to be concluded with a horde of swiveling crowd on the floor against the mounting decibels emanating from high-end music boxes.
Perspective girls from Nashville prepare for Miss BhutanUSA 2015
“We’d lived a life for years that had absolutely no taste at all”, revealed Rajen Giri, one of the founding members of the Fest, during the sidelines of the promo-night held on March 29 in Nashville. ‘But today, we are rolling beyond the necessity of a basic living and therefore we’re looking for something else that is globally trending’, he clarified.
While asked about the intent and relevance of the Himalayan Fest, Naresh Dahal, the lead organizer in the host state, said that it was all about bringing, preserving and demonstrating the entire Himalayan culture at one place annually.
He also reiterated that the Fest is bent on preparing a common platform for young boys and girls pursuing goals in the different fields of arts. He confirmed that the rationale behind ‘pushing the girls towards the ramp’ was to bestow them with a appropriate soapbox to display their glamour and intellect.
Asked about the likelihood of overlapping of schedules with soccer, the organizer said that the Fest for each of the three days would begin only after the matches are over. However, it can be well predicted that motive behind organizing the Fest in line with soccer is to cash in with a substantial number of audience coming in from far and wide. However, the two organizing committees (the soccer and the fest) have not sat together to find a common agenda so far.
“I have heard about the Himalayan festival also scheduled in Nashville coinciding our tournament,” Suman Subba, one of the lead organizers of fifth the interstate soccer tournament, told the Bhutan News Service over phone. “I want to make it clear that neither we have been requested for collaboration, nor we are at all interested. There shouldn’t be any confusion regarding this.”
It is also learnt that some spicy-hot buffet and beverages will be served at a fairly reasonable price. However, in view of getting hold of the entire crowd till the end without any mishaps, hard drinks would not go off the legal limits.
During the promo-night, the organizer also briefed the participants to visit their website for more details..The contestants are also asked to choose the category of contest and fill up the registration form with appropriate fees.
The website says that the Himalayan Festival USA is an annual event organized for the people of the Himalayan region living in the US. This event has been initiated to promote our rich cultural heritage, and to provide an accessible platform for our younger generation to showcase their talents through sports, music, dance, acting, modeling, and more.
Last year, the Himayan Festival was organized at Houston, Texas from June 13-15 with Prakriti Rai being crowned as the First Miss BhutanUSA -2014.
A weeklong Shree Mahad Bhagawat Maha Purana has been underway in Tennessee since March 22.
Organised by Bhim Bahadur Bista at Rivendell Woods, Tennessee, (formerly from Bhutanese Refugee Camp, Nepal) the holy congregation is witnessing a sizeable chunk of devotees pouring in from Nashville and beyond.
“This is not just a family affair”, Bista informed. “Through this event we‘d like to offer prayers for global peace, harmony and prosperity and above all, a solemn tribute to all the departed souls.”
He also said that the occasion is all set to serve as a semblance and reminder of an unfaltering continuity of Hindu culture and tradition in the midst of sea of different creeds, color and denomination in a far off land.
Hindu devotees listen at Purana preaching in Tennesse
Pandit Khadananda Kafley from Colombus, Ohio, assisted by four other priests took to the mandap on March 22. The program is scheduled to conclude on March 28.
During his entire oration Pundit Kafley swayed the devotees with his mesmerizing skills and at times with some occasional shots of questionnaires to the crowd scooping from the verses of the holy book. Bhajans, with some musical jigs, followed during the breaks of the divine rigmarole.
During the sidelines of the event Kafley also exchanged some pleasantries with the youths and the old alike.
Time and again, he stressed an urgent need to invoke a “clarion call’ for all Hindus to practice and walk lives with the spiritual guidelines and advisory notes of the holy tome—Shree Mahad Bhagawat Maha Purana.
He also cautioned that the Hinduism, being comparatively liberal, might lose its fervor in the long run if the coming generation fail to emulate the essence of great and enlightening quotes of the book.
Shree Mahad Bhagawat Maha Purana literally means divine eternal tales of the supreme Lord. It includes many stories well known in Hinduism, including the various avatars of Vishnu and the life and pastimes of his (Lord Krishna’s) complete incarnation.
At the time when OBCA announced its fifth annual convention coming June, a man no less than its Chairman differed with the idea of holding convention to simply elect a new executive. Hari Adhikari Bangaley talked to BNS on the point of his difference with his own team and justifies for a joint plan of actions by ABA and OBCA involving all city-based community organizations. He apparently refused to subscribe to the idea of holding fifth convention without having any plan on the table. Excerpts of his interview:
BNS: What is the major disagreement within OBCA officials? Have you been talking to your staff on your point of disagreement?
Bangaley: After I assumed the office as a chairman, I asked the outgoing chair and others to send me details of OBCA-bylaws, registration status, and bank information. On top, I wanted to see the activity plan of OBCA. It was so much frustrating that it took several weeks for them to send me the bylaws. I had to make several requests for making those documents available to me. As a chair, I should be aware of where the organization stands. To my surprise, I found out that there was no any plan on table. I offered to draft the activity plan. When I sought a help from my lawyer I found out that OBCA had long been declared as “administrative dissolution”. I also found that the owner of OBCA in record is someone who had never been the OBCA active member. I made an honest attempt to begin a process of reinstatement, and that the board suggested former chairperson would support me in the process. Instead of receiving any helps, I did not get any cooperation as exposure of the dissolution made him further unhappy.
Hari Adhikari Bangaley
Second, accountability has been an issue. OBCA is a not for profit soon to receive a 501(C)3 status. It was well explained and discussed. Members were excited and everyone of us dreamed to get tax-exempted. To get to that stage we need to have a thorough activity plan which I assured to bring shortly for discussion. The other thing that upset few in the leadership was the track record of past activities with expenses details that I requested to be documented. I explained that while we apply for 501(3) status after OBCA gets reinstated there will be several questions to track past activities which is a requirement. I was flexible with my requests that the past chairman talk to the concerned in-charges and give me tentative activities. I did not receive anything positive as financial status was not clear. Even during the Colorado Convention, details of income and expenditure was not made available even after several of my requests. People involved in fund raising were reluctant to provide details to the finance section.
Third, I always brought agenda of unification between ABA and OBCA in our meetings. Few OBCA members were not ready for that. At one point we could get consensus about possibility of working unitedly. When I talked to ABA members, they seemed very excited to work together and even ready to holding the convention jointly. I conveyed within OBCA the development about our talk with ABA and later circulated a detailed email seeking suggestions, and proposing an agreement from our team. I asked if any member is willing to be part of the planning meetings. Instead, the vice chair circulated an email stating that the board was against the unity of OBCA & ABA. Few board members who were quoted to be parties to this decision against the unification actually did not know anything about that.
BNS: Are there any specific agendas and objectives for the convention, or just a convention to keep the vehicle moving?
Bangaley: I have not made public anything about the convention. I learnt from my sources that for those who want to hold the convention, the main agenda is to have election and form a group of their favorites.
The joint convention that I proposed to my team at OBCA has specific and detailed activity plan to endorse. My proposal is to seek city and state organizations to get involved in those activity plans and discuss collaborative programs between the cities, OBCA and ABA. OBCA and ABA have discussed urgent need issues to carry out jointly. There may be so many issues that people may want us to work together for. At this point, as I get consensus from OBCA, the joint team of ABA and OBCA will finalize identifying the most important ones and discuss it extensively. It will certainly be announced soon. Very importantly, we will start working on few issues of services to cities even before the joint convention of 2015.
BNS: There have been many expectations from OBCA by the community in all states. Why not a single program could be realized even on a trial error basis?
Bangaley: I fully agree that there is high expectation from OBCA from the community in all states and cities. To this end as the chairman of OBCA I have drafted a comprehensive activity plan for all states and cities and have sought collaborative engagement. If everything works well in ABA-OBCA planning meetings, we can further sketch it to one go program as appropriate for our community across America. ABA has shown its willingness and I have been always ready for it since the beginning. There is no doubt that all communities in all states and cities ever differ to this noble mission. I see the chances and would look forward to see a welcoming voice of the cities and states to make it happen.
BNS: Is there still avenue to do joint convention or unifying program by OBCA and ABA? When will that happen?
Bangaley: Yes, there still is chance to have a joint convention of OBCA and ABA if everyone is honest about making it happen. We have not yet announced it but this is what we have been planning. The details will only be out as we sign an agreement. When these two organizations are willing to do it together and ready to plan what we can do together, that may be what everyone is looking for. I think if cooperation is given to this noble task from every sector, this should happen in the 2015 Joint Annual Convention. In this plan it’s not ABA and OBCA that will be rendering services to the community as a whole. But we have been planning to propose a resource team in the system to engage and involve all intellectuals and other resources that we have within our own community. This is possible if this unification process is not obstructed. It also depends upon the intellectuals, the community organizations and mainly the media group like yours that is required to get involved on acting to do right thing to make this happen. If personal interests chip in, it’s going to be another unfortunate history of petty politics of Bhutanese here in America also as the saying goes “Nepal Gayo Kapaal Sangai, Burma Gayo Karma Sangai”.
Expressing his disagreement to the convention, which OBCA has called for June 12-14 in Texas, Bangaley said he was “unwillingness” to be a part of it.
“I seriously disagree with the statement from the OBCA as I do not believe it is a general consensus among the board members”, says Bangaley in an email interview with the Bhutan News Service.
On question whether he prefers to resign, he affirmed the possibility of joint plan of actions decided by a joint convention. He said, “I am not going to resign, before realizing the plan of bringing joint plans by OBCA and Association of Bhutanese in America. A resource center is what I am envisioning for joint steps ahead.”
In a press statement received by the Bhutan News Service, OBCA board member Manoj Rai and press and publicity secretary Karna Gurung have announced some details of its upcoming fifth national convention.
According to this statement, the convention will be held Texas from June 12-14. Upon query of BNS regarding the venue, Karna Gurung said, “it is yet to fix the convention venue. However, we’ll convene either in Fort Worth or Dallas.”
OBCA claimed that it has formed a national convention organizing committee (NCOC) headed by its vice chairman Hari Upreti to plan and carryout activities of the convention. A fifteen membered program organizing committee (POC) has also been formed in the host state with special input and leadership from Organization of Bhutanese Society (OBS), Dallas and Beginners Community Support Group (BCSG), Fort Worth. Prakash Koirala, president of OBS and Nayaran Subedi, president of BCSG have been entrusted with responsibilities coordinating the convention.
“The NCOC and POC will jointly reach out to the community organizations and members through various means and media with its program details and invitation for the convention at the earliest convenience,” read the statement.
During the convention, OBCA will be electing its new board and executives. Besides electing its officials, the press statement of OBCA does not carry any agenda of future action plans.
Gurung and Rai have invited everyone in the Bhutanese community to provide it with ideas and suggestions to complete its convention successfully..
Meanwhile, chairman Bangaley added that he has been talking to ABA on possibility of holding the convention together, claiming of some green signals from the latter.
According to him, he already informed his board members regarding joint convention and possible activities of OBCA and ABA to help local communities in each cities.
Bangaley also mentioned that many other OBCA members including its secretary have shown reluctance towards this convention.
