Car hits Bhutanese to death in Raleigh, North Carolina

A pedestrian, 68-year old Bhutanese, who was hit by a car today morning, while he was crossing a road to head to his English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, has died.

The victim is identified as Nanda Lal Poudyel. Late Poudyel arrived Raleigh through resettlement program from Sanischare refugee camp in eastern part of Nepal in August 2008.

The accident, according to eyewitness, occurred at the intersection of Falls of Neuse and Sandy Forks roads, less than a mile from victim’s house.

Poudyel, who was immediately rushed to Wakemed Hospital after the incident, was pronounced dead at around 9:20 am.

Our correspondent in Raleigh, who saw the dead body in the hospital, described that the victim’s upper side of the body, in particular head, neck, right ear, among other parts had sustained severe bruises.

Preliminary investigations of the police authorities suggested that the car hit the victim when he had made more than a half way of the road. Authorities confirmed that a white American lady drove the sedan car, which had hit the victim.

Relatives of late Poudyel informed that the funeral rites have been scheduled for Friday from 2-5 pm in accordance with Hindu culture and tradition.

According to Dilli Wagley, who is been actively involved in discussing the issue with the police authorities in the area since the morning, the authorities have assured a fair and thorough investigation to the bereaved family. According to Wagley, the police authorities are yet to disclose the details of the investigations officially.

Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of the Bhutanese folks dwelling in the North Raleigh area held today afternoon, decided to collect 100 USD each from every Bhutanese families in the area, to help the bereaved family with the cremation process. An estimated 25 Bhutanese families live in Raleigh.

Late Poudyel, who originally hailed from Dagana district while in Bhutan, was staying with his family in rented apartments. He is survived by his wife, four sons and five daughters.

  42. This is such a socking news to me. I and my husband are lip-locked at this hour. We really can’t believe that he passed away leaving behind the community in a mournful state. We (I and my husband) were late Poudyel’s neighbor for about nine months before we moved to Charlotte and we always found him a kind hearted person. I always used to see this gentle man with a shiny face that reflects a good gesture and smile. He was very friendly and perhaps hardworking.

    In fact, I will mis his guardianship, suggestions and kind words of encouragement, which used to be very helpful. Let the departed soul rests in peace in heaven and let the god give enough strength to the bereaved family to overcome this mournful situation.

  46. Heartfelt condolence to the bereft families. This is not the first incident; there are already couple of fatal car-hit accidents causing death of innocent (rather ignorant) people. It is time to teach our elderly people about road safety procedures. The concerned resettlement agencies and Bhutanese-based organizations should work to reduce this kind of avoidable accidents. We talk about big issues and keep in shadow these kinds of basic safety measures which are vitally important for the resettled folks, so lets keep in mind that there is no substitute for someone’s life…. the contribution made by Bhutanese folks of Raleigh, NC at this crucial hours is appreciable…

Expressing my heartfelt sorrow and condolence to the bereaved family of late Poudyel, I wish to appraise all my Bhutanese diaspora that these sort of traffic mishaps and subsequent deaths which frequently come to the fore time and again, should serve as an eye-opener to all of us.We know we have come from a comparatively ‘dark spot’ of the world wherein road traffic, sidewalks, zebra-crossings, blaw blaw blaw have been a concern of a very few.Above all, having been confined to camps for so long, our aging and illiterate parents/grandparents are ,by and by, finding extremely difficult to adopt the new settings and one of the ugly moments they go by is —- when they have to walk across busy American roads and intersections.
    Therefore,we all collectively need to instill our parents/grandparents/neighbors about road safety, traffic etc, before they venture out.Doing so might reduce the number of untimely deaths.I wish all the mushrooming Bhutanese organisations, associations and communities will come forward to study the looming scenario of the hapless lot of our population more seriously.
