The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said that the agency is committed in finding a solution to the Bhutanese refugees who are likely to remain in the refugee camps of Nepal.
Speaking to reporters in Jhapa, Shinji Kubo, UNHCR head of its Damak-based sub-office, reiterated the agency’s stance towards finding a durable solution to those refugees.
“UNHCR has been working very closely with the government of Nepal and also the international community represented by the resettlement countries for finding solutions for all the refugees,” said Kubo adding, “And that would be through resettlement, voluntary repatriation and the solution for the remaining people in Nepal.”
He also expressed his hope that the agency’s efforts would be further accelerated as he claimed “there would be no unturned stones left in terms of the solution for the remaining population”.
According to him, the UNHCR is committed to achieving solutions for all the refugees.
“We need to work very closely with the government of Nepal, people of Nepal, refugee community and the international community as before.”
He also mentioned that it was very unfortunate for the remaining refugees since their number has been decreasing due to the massive resettlement underway. However, he assured of continuous assistance for those refugees from the agency.
Meanwhile, hundreds of refugees, their leaders and representatives from various aid-agencies jointly observed the 16th World Refugee Day with various programs both in Beldangi and Sanischare refugee camps.
