Barun Chhetri, 24, from Sibsoo, Samtse of the Southern Bhutan has been ranked the first among all students of his batch in the Anna University of India.

This university is ranked the sixth among Indian universities, and has over 200 international students from various countries including Bhutan.
A student of the Hindustan College of Engineering under the university has scored 75 percent as aggregate this year, and will be awarded with a gold medal in coming April, reported the Kuensel Sunday.
Chhetri told media that he has regarded the success he achieved as lifetime achievement in his academic journey.
He is currently working at the Yalama Arts and Consultancy, a private architecture firm in Thimphu, according to the report.

Any achievement superior in comparison must be considered temporary feat among the equals striving for the same target. I appreciate Barun Chhetri not as mere “Southerner” but as Bhutanese that made the difference abroad in India. Let us rise little above our communal mentality as such trend are not “hits” among the common Bhutanese populace. If such exist in part among the unsociable high cast in the South, that is higher among the ranks of upper level dignities in the capital. They should not be mistaken as part of common Bhutanese culture… (as Bhutanese should not be taken hostage by handful few but should remain the common home of the mass)

Monarchy tried to keep the southern population as a mere third class people and has limited at all the walks of life. With this complexity and harshness, inhumane practice made a generation gap for southern population. Schools were shutdown; students trying for education (basic needs) were prevented by imposing different clearance parameters for this category only.
Inspite of these entire created human hazards, it’s too genuine for Mr. Chhetri who got the rare opportunity to top the batch. This needs appreciation.
But where will he land in the Shangri-La of GNH? Will he be given the job of his capacity?

Fthar Mackey is long dead now but I still remember his visits to Sherubtshe while I was still a young confused sophomore. His words often though not exactly were “ Why only Chhetri, Rai, Kumar, Sharma…..Why not Dhendu, Dorjee, Waagdi, Norbu…has hit me hard until today? Here he was talking against the academic excellence and scholarships won by these Kumars and Sharmas. Then, the Examinations were conducted by India! ( We should keep this in mind) Every time he visited any academic institutions he left behind these racially influencing vibes. Considering such sensitive issues and his own education and background, FOL he should have never had this in his mind and if at all he had, he should have hold his effrontery to himself. This trend of Mackey has been strongly inculcated in the RGOB and the institutions around the country since then. So far I know, the Southern Bhutanese were looked down for their academic excellence and progress in nation building. And ironically, their achievements was one of the main causes that gave the government to design the plan of expelling them. The plan went cracking and the hapless Southern Bhutanese inside and out side were left a generation back in all prospects of life. Nevertheless, it is still good that despite the challenges, some have come up well and Barun is one such who set an example. Congratulations Barun! At first I felt, as Yeshai felt, the title of the article should have been “ Bhutanese” instead of ‘ Southern Bhutanese’ but given the imperativeness we have had for long it makes sense. Finally, I don’t know if these excellences would be readied to challenge the the RGOB for making us refugees but these will certainly support our cause and give us advantage. We all need to fill up the vacuum purposely created to inhibit our intelligence and calibre.

Its only single man’s advice with vested interest enveloped the sense and mentality of the 4th King, he then, regarded Father Mackey’s words precious than the degree of patriotism in the heart of loyal citizens.The very Father Mackey’s plot divided Southern Bhutanese into seven different categories.
Most people are remembered after their demise for their great deeds and has remained at all times in the history but the Father Mackey shall remain in the minds of Bhutanese as a man full of curse.
Yes, long after his demise the 4th King realized the err and and the wrong advice received and followed. So, before anything going wrong personally against him for all the wrong doings he resigned from the throne and displayed the drama of pseudo- Democracy creating ready made leaders JYT (His daughter’s father-in-law) and Sangay Ngedup, his uncle the champions of his drama. He, then make JYT say that His Majesty gifted people the Democracy…Mockery to the world. Sad to hark back to, 100s of Baruns became the victim of his perceptions and that is the loss gained by 4th King for his race towards sin profit. We have big hope upon the 5th King, for he has pious heart and his actions are seen different than his Father. Lets hope the future of our young generations will be blessed and no more Mackey enters Royal family and ruin Bhutan again.

When the government here is desirous to give citizens sway over all of the country (under certain condition, of course) I do not understand why the citizens from the southern districts think of being confined only in the South, neglecting the rest! Thinking from above the “shoulders” would make things much easier as they are. Do other valued readers too think that the fifth king is a pious king and his actions are different than his father’s?. I would be interested to know and up date my view. So far I have seen is a family matter and the rescript from the 5th king to our issues is as hard as his father.
