Hurricane Igor, which continues on its destructive path along the Atlantic seaboard, this time hitting Canada’s shores, has affected the life of Canadian Bhutanese in St. John’s Newfoundland.
Winds of more than 130km per hour have caused extensive damage and heavy rains have flooded communities, washing out roads and stranding residents in their homes in the province of Newfoundland.
Sam Synard, mayor of Marystown in Newfoundland, said communities were struggling to deal with the deluge.
Meanwhile, flooding and wind have affected many homes and most of the local schools remained closed .The government has announced state of emergency.
Deg Nath Neopaney informed over telephone that he remained whole night taking noodles and his families were moved to relative’s house for food. Bal Krishna Adhikari, a newly resettled Bhutanese also said he and his families remain whole night taking noodles.
It is reported that this was the biggest Hurricane Igor in the history of Newfoundland. Around 54 Bhutanese have been resettled in Newfoundland.
