Human trafficking in Bhutan

Oct 12: A thirteen year old girl from Gelephu was rescued by an Assam based NGO–NEDAN foundation while she was waiting to board a train with her step-mother.

The girl was taken away from a women’s hostel run by Adivasi Students’ Union before she was sent back to Bhutan. She was living with her father and step-mother in Gelephu, but was mistreated by her step-mother regularly.

In absence of standard operation and procedure on trans-border human trafficking and HIV, the identification or diagnosing of such cases across the border is much difficult, reported the NGO.
