Camp team bags Rs 100,000; community rejoices victory

Celebrations among the exiled Bhutanese and donor agencies have continued even on the second day after the Bhutanese Refugee Football Team beat Sainik Youth Club 4-3 in the final match of the Eastern Region Knockout Football Tournament in the Mechi Stadium, Thursday.

The Caritas Nepal, which was a co-organiser of the tournament, the Camp Management Committee of Beldangi camp and the UNHCR’s Damak Office congratulated the team today amidst different programs.

The Caritas Nepal has even provided a cash amount of Rs 10,000 as token of appreciation, informed team captain Kiran Thapa.

Thousands celebrated while watching a final battle Wednesday in the Mechi Stadium, shooting of flares and waving flags and T-shirts.

Over 10,000 of exiled fans travelled to Mechinagar on public and dozens of hired buses and trucks.

The Sainik Youth Club took the lead through two goals in the first half of the battle before the match remained in a draw 3-3 until the 75th minute.

The battle became tougher for the Sainik Youth Club to win when Biran Tamang of the community team scored a victory goal at 75th minute.

The Bhutanese Refugee Team had entered into final beating Urlabari Club of Morang 4-3  on Monday.

Jointly organized by the Sports Development Committee of Jhapa and Caritas Nepal, the tournament had Rs 100,000 and Rs 50,000 as cash prizes for the best two team, highest in the region ever achieved.
