Aimed at raising awareness in the Bhutanese community, three different community-based organizations — Bhutanese Hindu United Society of Charlotte, Buddhist Community Association of North Carolina and Nepali Christian Community of Charlotte – jointly held an information sharing event in Charlotte last week.
Sponsored by Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), the program featured various presentations on important topics like 911, traffic safety and alcohol, domestic violence by CMPD officials, and question-answer sessions. Charlotte Mecklenburg School’s representative also spoke on education.
“We decided to tie up with CMPD to educate our community,” Kamal Dhimal, president of the Bhutanese Hindu United Society of Charlotte, told Bhutan News Service.
According to Dhimal, the response from the community was amazing.
“The feedbacks that we are receiving from the general public speak of need of similar programs. We’ll try our best to educate the community of public services and legal issues next time.”
The organizers also honored over a dozen of new Bhutanese-American seniors by felicitating them with khada. CMPD officials were gifted Nepali dhaka topi.
Meanwhile, the Society also donated US $501 to the community soccer team and another $501 to the Punya Foundation.
Various representatives from refugee agencies, local political leaders and well-wishers of the Bhutanese community were a part of the event.
CMPD provided free city buses for transportation and also sponsored snacks for everyone present.
