In a meeting with the Bhutanese delegation led by RK Dorji, the president of Delhi-based Druk National Congress (DNC), Nepal said that they had always wished to see the dawn of inclusive democracy in Bhutan.
“Nepali people have deep sympathy for the suffering of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal,” PM told the delegation.
Dorji also informed the prime minister about current political situation in Bhutan and hardship of refugees in camps as regard to limited facilities from donor agencies.
“It is good that you are here in Nepal completing your long confinement in Delhi,” PM Nepal told.
Dorji informed the Nepalese caretaker Prime Minister that the Bhutanese leaders were working to establish a contact office in Kathmandu and have expected all types of supports to run the office.
“The establishment of genuine democracy in Bhutan, repatriation of Bhutanese refugees and strengthening of people-to-people relationship between Nepal and Bhutan are our priority,” Dorji told the PM.
Dorji also urged the government to issue travel documents for refugee leaders.

यूएनएचसिआरले जानकारी दिएको छ । शरणार्थीको तेस्रो देश पुनस्थापना कार्यक्रम अन्तरगत २००८ को मार्च ४ तारिकमा पहिलोपटक अमेरिकामा शरणार्थीहरु पुनस्थापनाका लागि शिबिरबाट लगिएको थियो । यूएनएचसिआरले दिएको जानकारी अनुसार केही दिन अघिसम्म ३३ हजार ८ सय जना शरणार्थीहरु पुनर्बासमा गइसकेको छन् ।
बेलायतले शुरुमा जम्मा एक सय पचास जना शरणार्थी पुनर्बासमा लैजाने इच्छा गरेको भए पनि हाल ९०० जना शरणार्थी लैजाने बताइएको छ ।
First group of Bhutanese left Nepal for United Kingdom
Including 19 women, thirty seven exiled Bhutanese destined for the United Kingdom (UK) departed from Nepal under the third country resettlement program on Monday. Now, the UK has now formally joined the ‘core group’ of eight resettling countries by accepting to offer resettlement for 100 refugees, as a part of “responsibility sharing”.
The British Embassy organised a media breifing at the transit camp of International Organisation for Migration (IOM of Kathmandu to inform about acceptance of the first lot of Bhutanese refugees in the UK.
Addressing the media briefing, British Charge D’Affaires, Sophia Willitts, said, “It’s heartening to meet the refugees about to leave for the UK to start new lives after so many years of uncertainty,” she said adding,” They will integrate well into their new host community.”
“The UK has a long history of welcoming people from other countries – we know that the diversity it brings makes our country stronger,” she added.
While, the UNHCR’s representative in Nepal, Stephane Jaquemet, said that his agency was extremely grateful to the British government for accepting refugees for resettlement. There are instances where people like you (refugees) have become an official like me, Jaquemet told.
Meanwhile, chief of IOM Nepal expressed that participation in resettlement project would give one tremendous sense of satisfaction. “IOM is proud in giving these refugees a new start in their life,” he said.
As of now, 34,500 Bhutanese have departed to the United States and other countries since the start of the resettlement programme in November 2007. The United States has so far accepted 29,496 refugees, Canada 1877, Australia 1787, New Zealand 461, Norway 335, Denmark 326 and the Netherlands 224.
Likewise, 77,616 Bhutan citizens still live in various seven camps. UNHCR informed that over 56,400 individuals have declared an interest for resettlement so far.

The Country Representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees , Stephane Jaquemet, who has been serving Nepal’s office from mid January 2010, has said that if everything goes as per his plans, UNHCR would be able to resettle all interested Bhutanese refugees in the next five years.
