Among the refugees who have settled in the West, upward social mobility among the Vietnamese diaspora has been very promising; a clear example for other immigrants of refugee background. Initially composed of war refugees who fled Vietnam after 1975 by boat (boat people) or many others directly airlifted from fields scourged by raging war; the Vietnamese refugees encountered many problems of which language problem was the worst. Skill, social skills, culture shock - name anything - the problems were never small.

No one believed (even they did not believe) that in the next 45 years, they would be one of the fastest growing communities in America. Be it business, education, professionalism and even politics - the Vietnamese are making a reckonable presence. What was the magic? It was education. One of the strict cultures in Vietnam is to regard education very seriously. The Vietnamese parents knew education would be the only social ladder of growth that would the American dream a reality for their kids. They were very strict, failure in schools could be a punishable offence (privately) at home. The result - excellence and success.

Today, you can meet Vietnamese doctors, nurses, entrepreneurs, professionals in most cities. New York Stock Exchange to Online businesses, they have a reckonable presence. China towns are now Vietnamese towns.

The Bhutanese diaspora has had a good start off, and the trend seems to be heading in the right direction. The Vietnamese had bigger problems than us. They won over their problems and built success even surpassing many other communities who had better chances than them. We are poised to do more in less number of years. Our opportunity and  timing are better.

To the recipient of the Penrith Local Business Award - Many Congratulations.
