Thinley’s statement irks BPP ; asks him to prove refugees as ‘non-Bhutanese’

The Bhutan Peoples’ Party (BPP) has condemned the statement of Prime Minister Jigmi Y Thinley who claimed that refugees of UN-monitored camps of Jhapa and Morang districts are socio-economic and environmental refugees requiring proper verification.

BPP President Paudyal

Issuing a press statement on Sunday, BPP President Balaram Paudyal said that such a statement from Thinley, who played a crucial role in evicting thousands of Bhutanese citizens 20 years ago, was a straight forward challenge to the host country Nepal and the UN aid agencies feeding the Bhutanese refugees for years.

“The controversial statement raising question on the nationality of the genuine Bhutanese in exile speaks of the nature of democracy of Bhutan as it has come from the head of the government that serves the autocratic king and the crown” said Paudyal.

The party also said that not a single person taking refuge in the eastern Nepal is a non-Bhutanese.

“The BPP asks Thinley and the Bhutanese regime to prove them as non-Bhutan,” said Paudyal adding, “Such an irresponsible statement from him shows that Bhutan is never sincere in resolving the long standing refugee issue, thereby clarifying the fact that India’s involvement is a must in the issue.”

The party also requested Nepal to initiate talks involving Bhutan, India, Nepal and Bhutanese refugee leaders for repatriating the refugees to their hometowns with dignity and honour.

“We also ask the Government of Nepal to assist the Bhutanese refugees in their democratic struggle and form a permanent taskforce to handle the refugee issue in Nepal,” added he.

The BPP said it is of the opinion that refugee issue is not only related to those dwelling in camps, but also encompasses internal democratic struggle and call for human rights in Bhutan.

“We ask the king of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk, to learn lesson from other nations ruled by similar dictators and become ready to resolve the Bhutanese refugee issue within this year.”

  1. Balaram can do nothing but issue statements which will have no effect at all on brutal Bhutan regime. He has been doing this for last twenty years but without any effect. His main aim is to get cheap publicity and netagiri. In fact he is doing the job of a camp secretary issuing press staements on behalf of refugees. No refugee elected him as their leader His party is a great failure on the ground inside Bhutan. His only work is to issue press releases whenever an event takes place and then keep quiet. Tell him to do the real job of a political party and stop this netagiri which is so disgusting.

  2. Hello, Bala Ram Jee it is good atleast, it is a statement, might yeild any effect or no effect. But i do not know you made a mistake or error some where, i see in you last line that says,“We ask the king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, Are you sure Is Jigme Singye is the present king of Bhutan ? I think you got to write the name of the present king of Bhutan.

  3. Dear Laxmi G
I have one diret question to you.Have you ever written single word for the welfare of exile Bhutanese? Do you have knowldege more than Balram Poudel in the area of Politic?
This is very lame comments you have given to him. Try to look in the mirror and judge the people. He is right in his postion. What do you aspect from Balram Poudel ,Bomb,Bullet and war inside bhutan? If you are victim of eye problem please do treatment and have good judge.
    Tarma
    Thimpu Bhutan.

  4. Laxmi and Premjee,
What are your positions so far? What kind of contribution you think you made for the advocacy of our issue? I may not like his ideology but he is right politically. That is the role of natas? At least they are making their stand clear through the press release.

If all of us were committed to that extend than the problem of refugee issue would have been solved long time back.
You know that, we have diverse thinking and approaches to solve the issue and tackled it differently, which prolong and complicated the matter further.
Let us join hand with our natas be it Dr.Dhakal, RK Dorji or Balaramji who have been fighting with the regime consistently.
    Thanks

  5. Dear ex-camp secretary Manorathji,

I think, at this young age, your eye sight is very poor. You need a good looking glass to read what is being said by Mr. Balaram. You are making a mockery of yourself by posting comment without reading the news properly. This is my fair comment but the lovely part is Balaram is still sane and I quote his last sentence, “We ask the king of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk, to learn lesson from other nations ruled by similar dictators and become ready to resolve the Bhutanese refugee issue within this year.”

  6. Tarma and Adhikari, You gyus seem to be BPP members and strong supporter of people like Balaram. If you think Balaram and his party are doing very good then good luck to you. Hope to get repatraited not get six inches “Chha Inchi” down your neck. You can imagine what will happen to you if people like Balaram were in power. Donot forget what he did when he was in Garganda as a BPP leader. O.K. friends.

  7. The statement made by BPP president Mr.Balaram would have been better, stronger and politically effective if he had issued it in the name of the coalition that he heads since long. If I am not wrong, Balaram is still the chairman of the national front for democracy, which I think is not dissolved as yet. Secondly, if Balaram thinks that the royal regime is not “sincere” for repatriation of the refugees, then what is the use of demanding for talks with Bhutan? It is the time for the Core Countries, government of Nepal and the UNHCR/IOM to think seriously on the controversial statement made by the Bhutanese prime minister in Kathmandu, alleging that the refugees in the camps are not Bhutanese citizens. If the Bhutanese PM’s statement is true, then who are the people resettled or under the process of being resettlement in different countries or those still in the camps? Who should be answerable to this questions? Neither the Nepalese government, core countries or even the UNHCR/IOM have so far made any statement on the Bhutanese version.

For me BPP president seeking justice from the king of Bhutan sounds ridiculous. International pressure to the Bhutanese regime could alone render justice to the Bhutanese, whether they are refugees in exile or over 80 thousand citizens deprived from their adult voting franchise in the country. More then refugees, the people within the country are suffering more in absence of freedom of expression and association. The political parties in the country are formed by the people, who are being blessed by the monarchs.

So, without establishing true democracy in Bhutan, people will continue to suffer and the person like BPP president should learn the lesson from the country of his asylum, where the failure of united political approach has dragged the country into continuous political uncertainty and turmoil.

  8. What is the qualification of mr balaram; i think he was gup in bhutan…how can such person can lead team and his friend TNR.
JYT said true…if people are interested they can live; door is open guys.
Never dream of snow in havana..cheers guys, do well

  9. Dear Laxmi Poudel/Jigme Tamanf
You are such a coward guys who gave you birth in this is struggling world.I think you have to born in heaven . Read this say carefully and write comments.”Bandaina muluk duichar saput mareyra nagaye”.
Try to turn your head towards nepal and learn from Maoist Movements.
I do hope you are in third country coward dogs bark from far. Donot try to be wasp at least try to be a bee.

JIGME TAMANF. I DO HOPE YOU HAVE BETTER QUALIFICATION THAN BALARAM POUDEL WHY CAN’T YOU OPEN STRONGER PARTY THAN HIM.CAN YOU SHOW MW WHICH DOCTOR AND ENG ARE LEADING PARTY EFFECTIVLY FROM OUR SOCIETY.
    TARMA
    THIMPU BHUTAN.

  10. Hellow Tarma ji,
Well said but i din’t find much interesting coz you seems no better then Balaram.
Any how, i like your optimistic dude…keep waiting the snow in havana.
You know that JYT is educated in west and he is far clever man then moist leaders in Nepal or others leaders.
But if your out side bhutan, once you get passport of 3rd country, you are welcome in bhutan man; just need to pay usd 200 per day. Fee is high; don’t mind sir because bhutan has unique culture n virgin nature.
Therefore, dude make good life in develop country who knows you son may be next obama….good luck buddy.

  11. Dear All,
Hail to Bhutanese exiled leader, Mr. Balaram. Respect to great leader TNR. They have really contributed to a nation of people, they have contributed against the malicious act of a full government. They have contributed protecting a nation of people from geting virtually extinct!! Think of the situation the Lhotshampas were subjected by the govt of JSW prior to 1990. See the torture given by the autocratic govt of the ‘GNH’ country. Yes, there were areas where we even young brains could find flaws in. Ofcourse, we all had a problem of security. But it was not intentional of any leader to harm their own people. It was the order of the day.

Sorry! now, we have defected ourselves from our common aspirations, from the point we defended. If people in the TCR cannot hold integrated socially and politically, we lost everything. We have sacrificed everything for our identity as a Bhutanese of Nepali origin now popularly known as Lhotshampas.
But in the name of comments some people say that Balaram should mention the present king’s name which is already there, some comment on the point why he did not get any benefit to the community while others disrepute him by questioning his position in Bhutan. He was a loyal subject of JSW in his set up. That’s all. To be a leader was not a choice of anyone, it was in cornered situation.
If we really feel that we have been targeted and all sorts of inhuman tortures were inflicted by JSW and his small government, let’s get united to bring him to the door of law. I think empty nationalism should not be advocated and individual rights should be protected unitedly.
I suggest to the great service provider BNS not to publish anything that disreputes and pollutes the cause of the S. Bhutanese.

  12. Tarma, you seemed to be a great fan of Balaram and his party. May be you are one of the Garganda product. It is a fact that Balaram was a gup “mandal” at Bara, Sibsoo with primary school education. He never saw a college or university. He thinks by simply sitting at Birtomod and giving press releases to Nepali vernacular paper he can win the Bhutanese battle. He has been doing this now for over twenty years without any effect. The result of inactivity of party like his resulted in the third country resettlement and not repatriation because there was no international support and backing for repatriation. Balaram never went abroad to world capitals or UN forums to lobby the international community. Without international support and backing Bhutanese refugees will never get a chance to go back to their country. Balaram doesnot have the education, experiences and exposure to work internationally on the refugee issue. He has no idea how the international political system works. But he thinks he is a big neta. What a shame! and you Tarma you support Balaram because you share his mentality.

  13. Dear Friends,

Shyam BC has clearly understood the situation wherein our people were compelled to lead the Bhutanese movement for democracy and human rights. Bhutanese people were never educated in politics and related disciplines till recently. People like Balaram has boldly stood behind the southern bhutanese fellows and spoke against the JSW atrocities. Leaders are created not made in colleges and universities. I agree with Laxmi that Balaram has neither lobbied in the international communities nor travelled abroad but that is not necessary for him to do. His cadres are there all around the globe to lobby the international communities. Balaram has done good work for the bhutanese refugee and their causes just by staying in nepal inspite of difficulties and hardship.

Let us not comment negatively towards our leaders good works but we could provide them constructive criticism and suggestions through which they could improve their performances in the days to come.

I salute Balaramji for your bold stand against JYT’s bullying tactics. Keep it up.

  14. Balaram Poudyel is the present history of Bhutan. He himself is better than the Cash history of Bhutan written in India… if you poor guys have not felt the terrible pain and sufferings of thousands of Balarams do read once BHUTAN HIJO AAJA…. I have got one copy….. We need to salute Balaram Poudyel and his principles….
    only this today
    Jay

  15. I strongly supported the comments of Khem Bastola G

I strongly disagree the comments of Laxmi Poudel .I think you are much closer than us in case of Balaram Poudel.Do not think that all commnet makers are the lap person of Balaram Poudel.
His strong determination towards repatration ,full fletch democracy and humanright are praiseworthy . if you are educated than Balaram why can’t you be the leader of entire bhutanese people, if you want bhutanese people are ready to step down Balaram and keep Laxmi Poudel as their learder so that you can lobby UNO ,Political learders of world for the better bhutan. laxmi donot waste your powerful education please utilize it.
    Tarma
    Thimpu Bhuta.

  16. Tarma, Good. Go on and line up with Balaram. You seemed to be owing something to this man who looks more like a clown than a national leader in this picture. While you have the right to support any body you like I really donot like netagiri of Balaram type because it is just a waste ot time. Ask Balaram or yourself what has been achieved in last twenty years by such netagiri. BPP cadres including neta like Durga Giri left their party and went into exile in Germany, USA and other countries long time before third country resettlement began. BPP youth cadre like Ganesh Subedi, Ram Karki and Rajen Giri chose to go over to US and live a cozy life rather than struggle on the ground in Jhapa, India and Bhutan. I donot know what these cadres are doing? Come next twenty years Balaram will still be issuing such press releases to Nepali papers and supporters like you will praise him not really understanding what true leader should be doing for his people. If Balaram is true leader why doesnot he lead a demonstrations inside Bhutan at least in Samchi or Phuntsholing like what leaders like Ratan Gazmere, Jogen Gazmere, RP Subba once did. At least they showed the courage that they are willing to die for their people or go to prison. But this man he does nothing only issue press releases sitting in Birtamod. You think he is doing justice to a great cause?

  17. Balaram has done a great job by reacting to what Jigme Thinley has said on the refugees. Jigme Thinley meant to say all Refugees in the camps are not Bhutanese. Bhutan Peoples Party has rightly made a political statement and has asked JYT to prove if a single refugee in the camp is a non Bhutanese. At such a time the entire Southern Bhutan should speak one voice and condemn the irresponsible statement made by the prime minister in his recent Nepal visit.
With time Balaram has proved himself a commited and well versed Bhutanese political leader.
    Prakash,
    Phuntsholing.

  18. Mr. Prakash Chhetri, supposed to be from Phuntsholing and Mr. Tamra supposed to be from Thimphu old BPP trick. Donot forget refugees were already categorized as no.7, non-Bhutanese when they were inside Bhutan and kicked out of the country whereas we know all of them are bonafide Bhutanese nationals. How can you say this man Balaram made a good statement? It was the most irresponsible and bogus statement. Bhutan already proved through the citizenship act of 1985 now included in the constitution that all those who left the country are non-Bhutanese. What more proof you want from JYT? I donot understand why the camp secretaries are keeping quiet? They should have done some home work before JYT’s visit and requested the diplomatic community and UN office present in Kathmandu to request Bhutan to resume Nepal-Bhutan joint verification of refugees and return of those who are found to be Bhutanese. That would have made some impact since the verification was agreed upon by two sovereign nations and till today it is not withdrawn. Just making a statement for the sake of netagiri will not serve any purpose. Instead of Balaram making such a statement the core group should have been mobilized and made to speak on behalf of refugees. I am sure while TCR is an option the core group will also respect the right to return of the refugees. If you think Balaram did a good job then go and congratulate him and donot waste time in this site.

  19. Hello friends I read some commets on Balaram Poudel and wanted
critics to tell that leaders are not made but they are born. You could
also have opted to become leader to know the flavor of it’s
responsibility and criticism but fortunately you can flatter and
criticize being an analyst without any analysis and degree. Here you
go: Imagine a situation you were in Bhutan now, you you wouldn’t even
have seen a television, let’s forget using smart phones or using
Internet. You would be a simple subsistence farmer and wrangling with
your kids with poverty. You got an opportunity to get rid of this
level of life to come to refugee camp in Nepal and enjoyed your freedom
just because, there were leaders(you did not vote for them) who
fought for the human rights and democracy for lhotshampas. They were
jailed, beaten, tortured and even persecuted, not for their daily business but
for their commitment to justice. They came to camp and advocated for
the involvement of UNHCR, UN agencies and European union for
humanitarian assistance and you did not pay them for their intangible
and continued hard work. You got ration, went to school and even might
got chance to get high school or college degree with the stipend.
Leaders continuously were working out to repatriate but it did not
happen. Without the involvement of political parties, human rights
organizations and press media you would not have been on this stand now. Everybody assisted everybody knowingly or unknowingly, willingly or unwillingly but now we have a global mind to think being in the largest democratic country.

So Mr. Laxmi Poudel, you also have not paid me for using my time to write and educate you for your ignorance so think about this too. I am just doing this for your sake which is free! Everyone likes free ha, Take it!!

  20. A good reflection and evaluation Usita Pandey.I appreciate you matured thinking and healthy comment. Not only Budathoki, Basnet,Balaram, Rizal, Dhakal, Bhampa and Rongthong many senior leaders and community workers have contributed immensely to the Bhutanese movement. It is easy to point at somebody and say this has gone wrong because of you.One has to be at others shoes and think rationally. If Balaram,Budathoki had not taken the responsibility of organising the political movement in 1990, other leaders taken in to prison would have never got released, rather would have received death penalty and the change that has taken place in Bhutan today would never have happened.
Remember guys, don’t curse third country resettlement and make an escuse to defame your leaders whereby not to contribute for the movement. TCR is a blessing in disguise.Given the mentality of some of you in the comments you would have never seen a foreign land and come above the poverty level in your life had you been living in Bhutan. You thank the circumstances and your leaders and join hands with them for a true democratic change in the country. If you guys are so patriotic you can came to Bhutan from the countries of your relocation after a true change is achieved.
If you evaluate the movement through a holistic view point there has been lot of positive achievements. You should see things rationally.
Jigme Thinley should now prove the Refugees in the camps as non Bhutanese as challenged by BPP. His statement has not only betrayed the sentiment of the Bhutanese people but has questioned the position of International community on the decision of third country resettlement.

  21. Pandey do you think Balaram is a born leader that he can lead. Tell me where he has led so far? Where is repatriation? His party failed to even restore teaching of Nepali in southern Bhutan which was banned in 1989 let alone democracy, human rights etc. Go and ask refugees to vote for him and I am sure even his party members will not vote for him.

  22. Balaram Poudel is one of the living history for the democratic struggle in Bhutan after Bhutan State Congress in 1952. Remember and belive me that he will be a great asset in future one day. People whosover critised him will help him to become more stronger. So thanks to one who critise him and LONG live Balaram Poudel and BPP.

  23. To me, it seems like the same person is posting the comments over and over again in support of Balaram. I have only one thing to say to you, you are ignorant, you are too young to know the history of BPP and Garganda.

  24. Mr. Poudyel first of all what have done for the promotion of political activities in Bhutan? Did you organized any sort of program inside outside the country.U have no shame to comments on Balaramji’s hard work and his selfless services. He has been working tirelessly for 20 years with the refugees. U also commented on his qualification, academic qualification is not the only criteria to be a leader.Leadership quality is inborn quality and it won’t come with the degrees alone.
I had tussle with Balaramji regarding 3rd country resettlement but I don’t mind because it was issue based.Whatever BP doing is a commendable job.Mr. Poudyel don’t just bark do it something concrete before you pass the judgment to someone who is doing a community services for the greater cause of the people and the nation.

  25. I find some friends repeatedly questioning about BPP and Garganda. I would suggest people to ask oneself, what did your parents do inorder to give you birth to to see this wonderful world ? This sort of critism makes people to judge that people critising BPP needs to read world history inorder to brodern theirs future vision and wisdom.

  26. Mr.Laxmi Poudel G.
I think you are most used spy led by tyranny Monarch of Bhutan. Do you know who evicted innocent bhutanese from southern belt of Bhutan?. You are holding the most nasty words towards other. Think at least one hour before to write comments. You have not break one stick for the sake Bhutanese people who are thirsty about justice in camp and inside Bhutan. Please use your right brain. Do good be good and aspect good always from others. You are most educated figure who attend university, college and every things . Try to turn the pages of history you know more than us.
    Tarma Thimpu Bhutan.

  27. Chakra, BP is doing a commendable job for you but not for me by issuing press release in Jhapa and doing nothing inside Bhutan or in India or at the international levels. Who will read his statement inside Bhutan? BP will be doing this even after all refugeees go for TCR because his only job is to issue a press release. That’s all. Only fools will think he is doing a good job.

  28. Mr. Chakra needs some improvement on reading skills. You got zero understanding of my supportive comment to the leaders; thanks Prakash Ji and Bhumi Putra; persons like Prem seem to be smart and should assist the leaders to achieve the common goal.

  29. hi guys….most people who are in favor of BP where his team and BP tell them to write because he can not write simple good english.
So, in my view, if you guys are in 3rd country….just focus in your carrier or job; if you all keep on talking about this people…its just waste of time.
They all old craps BP, TNR, RKD and any other who claim them self leaders. We need to get new youth generation thinking, idea and view.
Let them dream snow in havana….
    cheers ….please don’t waste time here…

  30. Dear Usita,
I didn’t comment anything about your praiseworthy writing. You are right supporting Bhutanese Movements through BP. I openly commented on Laxmi Poudyel’s nasty comments. Usita I will take your advise and would work on my reading skills. Thanks for your suggestion.
Laxmi u are trying to became smart talking negatives about the Bhutanese struggle.Press release is the only viable option at this juncture, u mean to go into Bhutan with bombs and gun. I don’t believe in gun culture so I say whatever BP doing is doing great.

  31. Who is this Laxmi. You said Balaram looks like a clown not a leader. Balaram is not university educated and could not do anything in Bhutan and internationally. You seem to be a very smart leader. why not you give your true introduction and show your photo through media and do something in Bhutan as a leader. Nobody knows you and you compare yourself with Balaram Paudyel. Balaram is a established leader whether you like him or not. He has not asked for your support.with you rotten mentality you dream to be a leader in the next birth.
All the changes in Bhutan so far has taken place because of BPPs 1990 movement supported by mass uprising.History is evident for this fact.Try to evaluate this if you carry slighest commonsense.

  32. Why people evicted?
People taking part indirectly or directly in the mass rally of 1990 were forced out.But if people didnot take part and are still being evicted means they are illegel immigrants which both BPP and Govt. of Bhutan will not encourage. Dear friends once again please rembember onemore thing that the donation receipt of BPP and PFHR will be a proof to prove that one is a political victim. BPP will take full responsibilities of the activities undertaken under its leadership, which no other can and has the right. This may sound funny and joking because truth is always bitter. Do you think that people resettled in third country are safe and you will not be verified in future?

  33. hey prakash chhetri, i think you are son of balaram or balaram himself; seems your frustrated dude..better go 3rd country and make good life rather barking here. Never dream of snow in havana dude…..BPP is worst political party in world, i dont consider it as party; you guys are useless craps.
haha man its joke that you are proud of BPP; come on dude woke n see the wor

    NYC

  34. When people starts naming individual, this means that he needs to educate himself to be a productative individual for himself and the country at large. So that discussion and debate can be a positive input for the advancement of the family, society and the nation. So friends wake up and come out of the well to see this wonderful world created by God, don´t just be unproductive burden.

  35. Hey jimi tamanf look you face on the mirror. Ask yourself what have you done for the movement as of today. You seem to be a big smart dude. You coward dude, dont give your big talk. You donot have guts even to write you real name and you talk big. Do something for the movement and say you have done better than Balaram and other leaders.Morally you should be ashamed to tell craps to the senior citizens like BP, TNR and RKD. How do you address your father and grandfather, you dude. Learn to behave well, you spoilt brat.
BPP is a history of southern Bhutan. Dont misjudge BPP.Your grandchildren will realise its importance.

  36. Initially warm regard to all commenter,
Hey you all who are in support of Balaram are still in illusion. He had not push the Bhutanese movement a inch forward. He just wanna be popular only. His statement might sound wealthy but in fact his statement won’t trigger a target because his statement was deliberately forwarded to show he is still devoted toward country but his statement are meaning less. Rather it is better to neglect his statement. And what a heck this BPP is? what kinda party is this only member with special position, i mean with no any general member. So, let us not race behind this fake leader henceforth.

  37. Biras, I think nobody is asking you to support BPP. People of your mentality won’t fit in any political organisation because you don’t seem to have political culture. You see that Balaram has not pushed the Bhutanese movement a inch forward but the people with political understanding from any party see that he is shouldering a big portion of the Bhutanese movement. That is the difference. Better mind your own business. Balaram’s statement is timely and political.Atleast his party has challenged JYT to prove if there is any non Bhutanese in the camps.

  38. Dear Bhumiputra
I need not have to inquire my parent about adage and tedious legend of this abracadabra BPP and its rotten leaders because i am well known about curb and straight regarding aforesaid party and its leader. Just scrutinize yourself how much inch Bhutanese movement was pushed forward since the birth of BPP.
    @ Prakash cheetri
You are not the one who can predict the dimension of other political analyzer and i too don’t wanna be fitted in such type of heck party. Don’t babel about other Bhutanese party as well, they are also analogous to this BPP, only the member with special position. No one will be gonna become trustworthy just by spraying deliberate pumplate and by vomiting patriotic words in general henceforth. So please don’t try to become comical clown yourself in mass. Any way if blind lead the blind both of them definitely fall in pit.

  39. Dear friends ,
In a good cultured society, one never blame or forget the hardship faced by mother to give birth to a young generation. Positive individual with healthy family , social and cultural back ground helps others to grow by giving positive critism.I am sad to see ……..

  40. Biras, a political party survives through its history. BPP is a mass based party with history.Time will tell its importance and mass sentiment it carries. You and me might be having other better things to do. It is a endless discussion. Let us end the debate here.

  41. Dear bhumiputra
Any kind of hardship combated and faced for the sake of country should be in for of general deprived folks not to profit our leaders. In regard to the subject of our nationality, any kind of movement launched till today, all gonna directed by our aforementioned leaders recklessly without thinking compromising people demand. Being the political analyzer yourself i may not have to jot sequentially all the betrayed event.
    And dear Prakash cheetri
Political party does not survives only through its history some of its bygone history might be dreadful and hazardous to itself and it might be good for us to keep abusive secret of our party as it is.

  42. Dear bhumiputra

In regard to the subject of our nationality, any kind of movement launched till today, all gonna directed by our aforementioned leaders recklessly without compromising people demand. 43. I know who is Laxmi powdel . Only one man white this kind of spelling for poudel or Poudyal. now he is in USA. He has gone there before TCR. And he was always against RK Budathoki, Balaram, JM lama & Durga giri. If the situation thinks his name should be publish than I am ready.
    Manoj

  44. Monoj ji,
I think there are many who write podwel if i am not mistaken. Again I don’t think the situation needs to know who is this Laxmi?
I think not only laxmiji but thousands of other bhutanese are against balaram, budathoki and so on…
I too do that not because i don’t like them but the way they used people to violate for human rights and democracy in bhutan to establish Human rights.

  45. TO like and dislike Balaram and Late Budathoki is your individual democratic freedom, where everyone must respect. But if you say that there are thousands others who don´t like, then one can visualise individuals capicity ,attitude and vision in a civilised society. Another thing very interesting you pointed out is that they used people to violate for human rights and democracy in Bhutan to establish human rights. This indicates that you are being wrongly educated or you may have personally participated. It is only the court of law that has the right to decide.

  46. Yes Bhumiputra you are right, we were really educated in wrong way by our nasty leaders mentioned above. Just by knowing only the definition of politics, our leader bark as if they were the inventor of politics, they pretend as if they know every aftermath of some political task and they claim they are the ones who make illitrate folks cautious about law, rights and freedom. Just for hearing and to concord it sounds wealthy but in reality whats the consequence, we know well.

  47. The o so diverse positions of the Bhutanese in exile (shall we just skip the word refugee and instead talk about exiles which does much more right to reality?) keeps puzzling me. Of course I understand the generation gap between leaders (though often not recognized as such) who were adolescent or adult in ’91/’92 and the younger generation that is slowly becoming more visible politically and publicly.
What I do not get is why there is so often so much debate on who states what and when against who while the whole situation itself is so obvious. All know, based on experience or historic proof, that the latest kings of Bhutan and their government are the architects of an ethnic / cultural cleansing operation. That operation is the sole cause for the exile. As ethnic cleansing is specifically stated by the UN as an international crime against humanity we are talking about a crimical king and government in Bhutan. That in itself is a straight forward and logical explanation.

So why is it impossible for the Bhutanese in exile to speak with one voice and demand of the international community recognition for that fact and appropriate action. Meaning, why was there never a strong drive for sanctions against the Bhutanese regime for the crimes they’ve committed. Why is that not demanded by the joint political parties and the community leaders?

This is astonishing, especially if one compares that with similar situations across the globe. Former Joegoslavia and some north African regimes were on almost the same issues addressed completely different by their victims and as a result by the international community. Taking in account that the gross figure of the Bhutanese population is in the range of a major city, thus small for a country, it is an outrage that such a large percentage of that population was ousted. The Bhutan government might look powerful on a Bhutanese scale but internationally they represent a peoples that is in number about the same as the population of Amsterdam. So how come that in twenty years no one has been successful in pressuring the Bhutanese government for repatriation. If the west had invested the money that the refugee camps and resettlements cost in Bhutan I would be very surprised if the regime in Bhutan would have started this whole misery.

Why, by the way, has no one brought the Bhutanese government for the international Court of Justice in The Hague on account of erhnic and cultural cleansing? Why had there never been a strong international lobby. Surely there is an abundance of very capable people in the Bhutanese community in exile?

Keep faith and focus on the real issues,

  48. All the debates, for and against Balaram Powdyel gives the picture of a divided community having different dreams although sleeping together in the same bed! I do not know Powdyel personally but I know that people in the camps in Eastern Nepal are from Bhutan, once loyal subjects of the great kings of Bhutan. In saying that the people are Bhutanese, Mr. Powdyel served the cause of truth irrespective of his party objectives in the past or at present and served truth in his own capacity whether as educated or uneducated person! Hats off to this servant of truth that tasted pain which all Bhutanese everywhere share in some way.

Even if some have cause to malign him for lapses in personal life, he being part of the living history of Bhutan coming through times of bitterness and turmoil has fulfilled his job in his capacity by reporting well, against the blatant lie of a nation’s prime minister that campaigns to bury the truth.

Let those outside the cage advocate for justice in the manner mentioned by Alice Verheij against the real perpetrators that created criminals (the likes of BPP and RBA side by side) if any feel to possess more worth than Mr. Powdyel. No doubt, this neta will support your cause and campaign despite being maligned and belittled for various lapses… Shalom.

  50. At times, I feel this column is by and by becoming a hub for roadside-shitters, blank headed idiots, outdated blunts and and more precisely, ‘tharra-addict’ knobs.Just out of blue, a guy ignites a nonsensical debate on a cheap topic, create a high-volt drama and other follow the suit. What’s wrong with Balaram? Although he has not done anything worth as expected, but then, does it mean we bring him to Ground Zero by perennially outpouring stupid and weightless comments? Let’s all feel that he is one of our brothers and doing his best although he may not be at par with other successful leaders of the world. At least let’s all learn to appreciate his patience if not his achievements.
The editor of this blog, I believe, should carefully edit genuine comments and weed out rather rogue, arrogant and farty ones so as to make this blog a ‘people’s chautari’.

  51. Dear All,
As I went through the comments posted, I got the conclusion of why we are still in exile and why we didn’t get the chance of returning back to Bhutan.
I know, the political leaders (so called) were the people with no vision and clear mission statement but we were the people who gave them the chance to play on our future. I even know, we the Bhutanese were/are very much known of criticizing others but we never think about what we have done to get our mission for repatriation succeed.
As we were divided for nothing, we lost the hope of getting back to our motherland and now we are in the mission to be dissolved somewhere.
For this, so called Bhutanese Leaders and we the Bhutanese people are equally responsible because we did nothing rather than shouting and dividing ourselves for no reasons.
My last request for all the Bhutanese is: Never Forget that we are Bhutanese and keep on loving the motherland even on being at any part of this world.
I love Bhutan and I know Bhutanese are my brothers and sisters.

  52. So-called environmentally induced migration is multi-level problem. According to Essam El-Hinnawi definition form 1985 environmental refugees as those people who have been forced to leave their traditional habitat, temporarily or permanently, because of a marked environmental disruption (natural or triggered by people) that jeopardised their existence and/or seriously affected the quality of their life. The fundamental distinction between `environmental migrants` and `environmental refugees` is a standpoint of contemporsry studies in EDPs.

According to Bogumil Terminski it seems reasonable to distinguish the general category of environmental migrants from the more specific (subordinate to it) category of environmental refugees.

Environmental migrants, therefore, are persons making a short-lived, cyclical, or longerterm change of residence, of a voluntary or forced character, due to specific environmental factors. Environmental refugees form a specific type of environmental migrant.

Environmental refugees, therefore, are persons compelled to spontaneous, short-lived, cyclical, or longer-term changes of residence due to sudden or gradually worsening changes in environmental factors important to their living, which may be of either a short-term or an irreversible character

  53. I do strongly agree with Mr. Balaram Poudyal’s comments as well as Mr.Akarma’s comments that have been made above. I am one of the victims of forcefullly evicted people from Bhutan & presently living in third country would like to make this comments to all bhutanese to think about the future of Bhutan. Yes, it’s clear messsage that our PM Thinley gave to all the bhutanese those who are living in exile and inside Bhutan that there is no real democracy inside Bhutan. It’s also clear that Bhutan is not willing to accept the repatriation of genuine bhutanese refugees living in camps. so we must seek other ways to solve this complex problems of bhutanese refugees. I am ready to support the groups who are operating inside Bhutan for the real democracy sooner or later in Bhutan. Bhutan thinks that third country settlement is a suitable solution for the country. But, I would say that Bhutan is creating the environment of terrosim for future. Remember we are the people who have been suffering for last twenty years for no reasons. We shall support any movement either peace or arms struggle inside Bhutan for the people of Bhutan. We all the people must not forget our country and the peoples who are living under the autocratic regime and have no freedom at all. Many lhotshamps (Nepali speaking people) have been deprived off from the fundamental rights and discriminated in every respects. Because of this they are suffering from severe mental problem. Some of them have already committed suicide due to hopelessness and torture. As we all have already suffered a lot, so why not we contribute a little to creat a real democratic Bhutan? only way to pursue our goals is by arms struggle. Lets build up new environment, where every citizen will have equal right and freedom.

I also salute Mr.Balaram for your bold stand against JYT’s bullying tactics. Keep it up.

  54. Mr paudyal,
your statement seems to be a threat to the bhutanese monarch and to bhutan as well when you said about the king to get ready to reslove the situation and mentioning about the dictator thing..Well by this one can even doubt that u myt be involved in the recent attack in Kharbandi…but do remember that every soul in Bhutan loves our king and thats not through compulsion but its pure loyalty and love and we are here to defend our sovereignty and our king…if your thoughts are like this then mind you, you’ll never be a bhutanese.

  55. Dear Friends,

Reading all the comments, I am quite sure about why we were in exile for 20 years with no accomplishment in returning back to Bhutan.

The so called Bhutanese politicians were incapable, yet I know; we, the Bhutanese people were also not committed towards the feeling of patriotism and nationality. I am aware of the blaming culture that is in our blood. We did nothing, rather than blaming one another.

I don’t mean, we should agree with the pinion from one another; but still we must agree on the cause. I am pretty sure that we had no more cause than the violation of human rights in Bhutan. We were not concerned to our main issue, we were dividing ourselves saying that we have different ways to go. But my sincere request to those who still think they are Bhutanese and returning back to Bhutan is their human right is lets think of the possible way of having the rights of people secure in Bhutan. Lets not make Bhutanese issue, an issue of making money as everyone did.

To the youth, the hope of world; I am sincerely requesting, lets be on a united forum advocating the right of Bhutanese people just to live as a human being. We are the hope of this world and remember; united we stand, divided we fall.

I would love to see the Bhutanese youth getting united and getting the Human Right secured in Bhutan.

I am ready to join. Lets be together. The future is waiting us ahead.

    Thank you,

    Indra
