Just a few days after the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s position in accepting “genuine citizens” for repatriation, Opposition Leader Tshering Tobgay flayed the PM’s statement.
However, his explanation on bringing the longstanding refugee imbroglio to a logical conclusion has clearly depicted his “childish political ideology”. Indeed, a few comments posted on his post do explain the “political maturity level” the OL leader has.
The Prime Minister Jigmi Y Thinley on March 1 said that the government might bring back some of the “people living in camps” in eastern Nepal if they fulfill the criteria agreed upon earlier by the governments of Bhutan and Nepal. He is a short interview with him on this issue:
What is your overall view on the issue?
I don’t understand how the prime minister can even consider repatriation. In 2001 the Bhutanese and Nepalese governments began a joint verification of the people in Khudunabari camp. That verification process came to an abrupt end after the Bhutanese team was attacked and beaten up violently in 2003, just before they completed the joint verification of the people in Khudunabari camp. The joint verification process did not resume after that unfortunate incident. Therefore, I don’t see on what basis, on what criteria, the prime minister could even consider repatriating people.
Does PDP support repatriation?
No. Repatriation is no longer possible. Repatriation of some people was a genuine possibility 10 years ago, but even then, only if the verification process was honest and complete. That didn’t happen. Now it’s more than 20 years since people settled in the camps, plus most of them have opted to resettle in third countries. If repatriation was not possible 10 years ago, in spite of the best efforts of the governments of Bhutan and Nepal, I don’t see how the prime minister can even talk about it as a possibility now.
At a time when most of the camp people have accepted resettlement in third countries, some observers feel that the prime minister should not have spoken that the government “will bring” some of the people back as the PM’s speech might disturb the resettlement programme in third countries. Please comment.
I fail to see the logic in the prime minister’s statement. How can he commit to repatriate people if we now don’t have any basis of even identifying whether a person is a genuine Bhutanese or not.
What is the best solution according to you?
I am grateful for, and support resettlement in third countries, especially since the people in the camps themselves prefer to settle in third countries. In addition, I strongly support honest dialogue between the governments of Bhutan and Nepal to consider workable ways of bringing closure to this difficult problem.

being one of the poplitical leader of king gaysher you are just verbally giving the solution for goverment og bhutan. political leader should analyse the truth and that truth cannot hidden foreever . you must know who is real bhutanese and non bhutanese by yourself if you are relly political leader for yhe people not for the king Jigme and gaysher. you should read the history of the world how the people are stronger than the despotic kings. Do you read newspapers of the world daily or you just read the kuensel. Please do not comment like that. Jigme Y. Thinley is a matured politician. He knows the international pressure . He is playing the table tennis with a broken bat. But remember that once the revolution starts in bhutan the despotic king and rest of the corrupt ministers have to reside on the gutters that run to Wangchuk river in Thimpu.
This political leader should understand that people who were living in eastern Nepal r really Bhutanese, this is the truth. We came in USA by being a Bhutanese refugee not Nepalese, till today in USA we r called as Bhutanese.

The opposition leader, without doubt, is an immature idiot politically. It seems his political ideology is confined within self and the palace that he is associated with. He has ogled around the things so narrowly. He too seems scarce that if repatriation took place, he would lose his post from his party. It is clear enough through his expressions that he doesn’t work for the aspirations of people but imposes his pseudo policies and vested interests against the sentiments of the Bhutanese people. Refugee impasse has been protracted due to “quack-politicians” like Tshering Tobgay.He must have inculcated his vision far and wide and around before making this indiscriminate expressions. He forgot now that his post as a opposition leader has been secured for him by the refugees.
This clearly reflect on whose fabour Tshering Tobgay is on. These people are creating illusion on Bhutanese people eyes. They are all there in Thimphu to address the command of King. In fact, these agents are supporting and Strengthening absolute monarch in our country.
If peaceful protest and peaceful movement doesn’t work, then need to implement the ideology as Devi stated above. Blasting most of the check post around Thimphu and Paro should be on the option to make the people in power to listen the people’s voice. Keep on rocking “United Revolutionary Front of Bhutan.” We sharshop are always against the absolute king”!
What I feel see is Bhutan is democratic theoritically. This is a propoganda to divert the attention of the international communities on the Refugee issue. First, I see JYT just easing the pressure from international communities on the dignified repatriation of Bhutanese Refugees from refugee camps in Nepal and the Indian states bordering Bhutan.Second, general election is nearing and JYT to keep hanging as the PM is trying to impress the lhoshampas for their valuable votes in the general elections. Was JYT dumb when there were several rounds of bilateral talks on the refugee issue? On the other hand I see and smell on the opinion of the so called OL Tobgay. Tobgay should be very proud to be the OL when there are just 2 MPs from his party. I consider opposition to JYT government is none. Virtually the democracy is by kheshar, for Kheshar, to the Kheshar and his dhupoureys.For a vibrant democracy there must be scores of Opposition MPs.Had there been true opposition/democracy in Bhutan many sharchhopas and lhoshampas today would not have been deprieved of their citizenship.Students from poor families from east/south comparitively brilliant than their counterparts from the western valleys need not run here and there to book their spot under the government aided scholarships,
