At a time when one of the world’s largest resettlement programs has attained its climax, the United States of America said it received the 50,000th exiled Bhutanese from Nepal on Monday.
The number of Bhutanese refugees leaving for the United States as part of the ongoing third country resettlement reached 50,000 on Monday, said a statement issued by the US embassy from Kathmandu.
Together with 9,000 others already relocated to various Core Group countries, the number of Bhutanese refugees resettled has reached 59,000, according to the statement.
“We are grateful to our international partners, most notably the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), for their ongoing protection of this vulnerable population, whether they resettle or not,” said the embassy.
Meanwhile, the statement further said that the US is committed to accepting as many of the Bhutanese refugees whom UNHCR refers to for consideration in Nepal and who meet the requirements of US law for refugee admission.
The Bhutanese resettlement program is currently the second-largest resettlement program for the United States.
Bhutanese refugees, who have resettled in nearly all 50 States, receive employment and educational support from the US federal and state governments as well as non-governmental organizations to begin anew as productive, engaged residents, it added.
The resettled Bhutanese are highly grateful to the government of United States of America,other host countries,international partners(UNHCR and IOM)for helping our vulnerable population resettle and begin new life in the developed countries.We expect more assistance to the people who are still in the camps struggling with hardship for survival. The problems due to Bhutanese Refugee Crisis doesn’t end up after resettling the targeted number of people in U.s, or in any other countries. What would be the condition of those remaining people in camps, willingly, who are waiting their date of flight? What would people over there do, if they are Resettlement Programs get stopped??????? Can any one be answerable for this on-coming situation?? what would be the for people over there, who don’t want to be resettled????????? Still the sky over there’s not clear!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am glad to read the updates. The credit goes to some of the leaders who worked very hard risking their lives from Maoists, some of the great leaders are Hari Bangale, Manoj Rai,Setu Nepal and many more. I forgot all of their their names.They did not talk a lot like politicians but encouraged refugees through resocialization process in the beginning when refugees were reluctant to accept third country resettlement option. In the past America was viewed differently and it was the land for few political leaders and their cadres only but not its for everybody! This is the kind of freedom what they had been waiting for long.
There is also a sad part that the political leaders had to follow their people and finally ended up opting third country resettlement. They were used to writing writing project proposals targeting the refugees and survive on those funds. Now they have to work here. Since they were used to with easy money, they are equally finding their ways to survive using the same refugees in the united states too! Be careful of such scams. A simple example: they are emotionally blackmailing the elderly people telling them not become US citizens and stay as LPN(lawful Permanent Residents) so that they can constantly fight for democracy in Bhutan from here. They know that those people are easily motivated and leaders also know that they are not going to get citizenship. It is our responsibility to educate our parents about whats right.
I never had thought, i would be in the USA before the resettlement program started. I mean, when one is certain the other becomes uncertain. This is how nature works. The time gives you the solution but one must try to get it. And the solution for any equation does not come up unless you fixed the parameters. The people in the refugees camps are waiting and trying to come up with the solution. There is no need to worry on them. We should not call and treat them vulnerable. Hope to see them either in the third countries or in Bhutan.
By the way what are the criterion that need someone to be a great leader? Anyway, thanks to all people who are in the camps, third countries and in Bhutan. The time has come to act with logic and reasoning. Whoever may be, whatever may be every one is trying to do better for future. Lets not make differences among all.
I fully support Miss Pandey’s some clean opinions but, its baseless to point on those so called political leaders of Bhutanese refugees, currently residing in America to instigate elderly people…I think its ridiculous because, America accepts those refugees who are not involved in politics, organisation, or in communists revolution…Our so called leaders cheated in this criteria, and I think they are hiding their political history…If found, they’ll be directly deported as Us laws recommend…So its ridiculous actions for those coward netas to instigate people in this delicate matter! if done so, there’d no excuse!

I am confused to see the astonishing the views of Democracy. Why don’t the people stay in camps, or some parts of Asia to practice politics, and fight for Democracy in Bhutan? Is it possible to tumble down the chronic anarchy of Bhutan while staying far apart in America? How will you create the history as you mentioned above? !!Here, people victimized Bhutanese would like to feel how the life is, and how it should be, despite of past nightmares. I think Democracy is not well aware of the systems of America. For your kind information, America neither allows any immigrants/citizens to practice those activities which can threaten other’s sovereignty, nor instigate, and prepare for mission as you mentioned above. Though, we need to be optimistic in other fields for success, and get transformed to adapt new environment. Democracy, please do not drag innocent people further in the dirty of politics!

I think this is testimony of how much the resettling governments are committed and we should all appreciate the good work in providing life to the vulnerable population. I think people who have resettled have been gaining skills, continuing their education and contributing tax revenue to the countries they are settled. It is a right time to appreciate and acknowledge the efforts of the eight developed countries for their contribution to this large group of people who had no hope of living a life of dignity otherwise.
I would like to encourage the Bhutanese people in the camps not to hesitate for resettlement as this is a great opportunity to create your future. You would not imagine how different life is to graduate from being a refugee to being the green card holder and permanent resident of these countries and eventually the citizens. It is a time that resettled people should encourage and raise the awareness of those who are still in the dark.
